aspect of your house interiors. They speak volumes about your style and add
glamour and comfort to your home. Though there are different types of furniture
available in the market, none of them can beat the demand for wooden furniture.
Wooden furniture has made a unique place in our homes and our hearts and is
never outdated. However, wooden
furniture needs to be cared for or in other words, when cared for
properly wooden furniture can last you for decades. In this article, we will
consider a few tips on how to take good care of your wooden furniture.
Dusting
Air borne dust that settles on
your fixtures surface can be a major cause for scratches on your wooden
furniture tops. You need to dust your wooden furniture regularly. Use a clean
soft cloth or a feather duster for this purpose. You may want to dampen the
cloth to avoid scattering the dust in the air which returns to settle again on
the top. You can also use a small brush to clean hard to reach areas.
Wiping
Another way to ensure that your
wooden furniture is dust free is to clean it with a little warm water mixed
with mild dish soap. Water will not damage your furniture if you only use a
damp cloth to wipe it. Avoid using a soaked cloth. Once you have wiped the top
clean use a soft dry cloth to wipe any remaining moisture off the surface.
Polishing
The best way to protect your
furniture is to use some soft paste wax after your have dusted and wiped the
furniture. Apply a thin coat all over the furniture and wait for five minutes
before you use a soft brush or cloth to lightly polish the wooden surface.
After half hour, brush or polish the surface again, this time a little more
vigorously. This will leave your wooden furniture shining.
Placement
You need to be careful about where
you place your wooden furniture. Keep away from
direct sunlight and near windows through which sun heat penetrates. You should
also avoid placing your wooden furniture near heating units or vents. The high
temperature can cause serious damage to your furniture causing it to dry, fade,
shrink and even crack.
Removing Stains
For many removing the watermark
rings from your wooden table
top, which is caused due to water glasses or hot coffee mugs is a
challenging task. There are several ways in which you can get rid of these
marks. Take some petroleum jelly and apply it over the affected area and let
sit overnight. Wipe the jelly from the top surface in the morning and your
watermark is gone. You can also use non-gel toothpaste mixed with some baking
soda; rub it gently on the spot with a soft cloth till the watermark
disappears. Wipe out the surface with a dry cloth and use a little furniture
polish to return the shine.
Humidity
You should try and keep the
humidity level of your house between 40 and 45 percent. A lower humidity level
will leave your wooden furniture cracked; a higher humidity may cause it to
swell.
Your wooden furniture is very
precious. Taking note of these points will help you protect your furniture from
damage. Taking proper care of your furniture will ensure that it remains
beautiful and durable for a long time to come.
