Taking Care of your Wooden Furniture

Furniture is a very important aspect of your house interiors. They speak volumes about your style and add glamour and comfort to your home. Though there are different types of furniture available in the market, none of them can beat the demand for wooden furniture. Wooden furniture has made a unique place in our homes and our hearts and is never outdated. However, wooden furniture needs to be cared for or in other words, when cared for properly wooden furniture can last you for decades. In this article, we will consider a few tips on how to take good care of your wooden furniture.

 Dusting
Air borne dust that settles on your fixtures surface can be a major cause for scratches on your wooden furniture tops. You need to dust your wooden furniture regularly. Use a clean soft cloth or a feather duster for this purpose. You may want to dampen the cloth to avoid scattering the dust in the air which returns to settle again on the top. You can also use a small brush to clean hard to reach areas.

Wiping
Another way to ensure that your wooden furniture is dust free is to clean it with a little warm water mixed with mild dish soap. Water will not damage your furniture if you only use a damp cloth to wipe it. Avoid using a soaked cloth. Once you have wiped the top clean use a soft dry cloth to wipe any remaining moisture off the surface.

Polishing
The best way to protect your furniture is to use some soft paste wax after your have dusted and wiped the furniture. Apply a thin coat all over the furniture and wait for five minutes before you use a soft brush or cloth to lightly polish the wooden surface. After half hour, brush or polish the surface again, this time a little more vigorously. This will leave your wooden furniture shining.

Placement
You need to be careful about where you place your wooden furniture. Keep away from direct sunlight and near windows through which sun heat penetrates. You should also avoid placing your wooden furniture near heating units or vents. The high temperature can cause serious damage to your furniture causing it to dry, fade, shrink and even crack.

Removing Stains
For many removing the watermark rings from your wooden table top, which is caused due to water glasses or hot coffee mugs is a challenging task. There are several ways in which you can get rid of these marks. Take some petroleum jelly and apply it over the affected area and let sit overnight. Wipe the jelly from the top surface in the morning and your watermark is gone. You can also use non-gel toothpaste mixed with some baking soda; rub it gently on the spot with a soft cloth till the watermark disappears. Wipe out the surface with a dry cloth and use a little furniture polish to return the shine.

Humidity
You should try and keep the humidity level of your house between 40 and 45 percent. A lower humidity level will leave your wooden furniture cracked; a higher humidity may cause it to swell.
